Artist's Comments

My round one entry for Miss SDL 2009.

The theme this time around was "fantasy." I considered going with the traditional european fantasy look, but then I realized that this version of Zeta was Japanese. The kind of fantasy familiar to her would be traditional japanese myths and legends.

So here is Zeta, dressed up as one of her favorite japanese mythical creatures: the Dodomeki. The Dodomeki is a spirit (some say the ghost of a pickpocket) whose arms are covered in eyes. Zeta has carved eyes into her wooden arms for the occasion. (And her kimono is tied the wrong way because she's supposed to be a ghost, get it? :sarcasm: Aha-ha, cultural humor...)

There are a few other myths included as well. The hundred-year-old lantern that comes to life at night, for instance, or the ghostly fire that floats along whenever there are spirits near. Or even the gentle little scarf that blows along on the breeze looking for someone to wear it (and then strangles them if they become frightened by it when it wraps around their neck).

Woah.

This is EPIC.

This turned out so much better than I imagined it would! :D And I like the lantern. It's creepily cute. I think I'll name it Hikari. :aww:

Ah, Yami. You're the only person I know who can make wooden arms look elegant. ^^

Nice touch with the Japanese myths as well. I never knew about the Dodomeki and the scarf! :D

Oh my WORD. HOW ARE YOU GETTING THESE GORGEOUS PICS DONE WHILE AT CAMP?

It's official: you will have NO excuse after this point for not getting things done. XD

What I really love about these paintings of yours is how eye-catching they are from the very first glance. You see that and think, "Oh wow I HAVE to get a closer look at that!" You do a wonderful job captivating your audience from the get-go! ^^

The theme of the picture is VERY clever, even aside from the fact that several of those myths freaked me out. I was doing alright (esp. when you explained that she CARVED those eyes into her arms...yes I was worried XD) and it was kinda interesting even, and then I got to the final sentence about the scarf that strangles people who get freaked out. Which means EVERYONE because NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND would not get freaked out if a dang flying scarf wrapped itself around their neck. So thanks for freaking me out, Yami. XD That scarf is NOT GENTLE AT ALL.

But no, in all seriousness, you did a MAGNIFICENT job on this pic! I'm am totally not lying when I say I think you'll go really far in this competition if you keep at it, because your pics are wonderful: colorful, full of life, interesting, engaging, and just plain beautiful. Keep up the excellent work, Yami!

P.S. Got your email; you and Wings had some great tips! =D I shall revise and send you guys each other's suggestions so you know what's going down, and get you the final script by this weekend!

By sacrificing sleep, mostly. It's grueling and miserable, but I seem to like doing this stuff to myself.

But! But! I have to sleep sometime! :ohnoes:

And then you take a closer look and realize how disappointing they truly are. (Ok, kidding. :XD:) I've been doing new things with light and shadow recently. I'm not where I want to be with it yet, but I can certainly see the potential for some eye-catching drawings if I keep it up.

There were so many other myths I wanted to include, but I ran out of time so I just stuck with my favorites. I must've looked at hundreds of myths before I found one that could work specifically for her. Zeta can replace those arms, so it isn't a big deal if she carves them up. The lantern is one of the more common myths, but I still like the idea of an object coming to life and hopping around at night when it turns 100. And the scarf was so cute! It just wants to be loved! :(

I'm not sure I'll make it past this round, actually. I'm happy with this picture and a lot of time and research went into it, but it seems like everyone else went with scantily-clad european fantasy battle armor. (Seriously though, I couldn't dress a fifteen-year-old girl like that.) Anyway, wish me luck. :D

...>.> I cannot say anything to that because I totally do that to myself. ^^;

SLEEP IS GOOD YES.

XD *slaps upside head* Stop that!
You are definitely doing a great job with these, and if this keeps improving...well, I can't even imagine, because you are already really good. Guess you'll just have to move on up to exceptional. ^^

Yes. It just wants to be loved AND IT KILLS YOU IF YOU DON'T. Yes, how sweet, Yami. How wonderfully precious. ^^;

Oh come ON! You always say that but we both know you have a wonderful piece of work here. Plus I bet you get points for originality! =D When everyone else is doing the same thing, the original stuff really sticks out. I think you stand just as good a chance as anyone. Good luck! ^^ Not that you need luck, mind you; you've got talent already.
