Description

The Quallu Mer gets its name from the Inuit legend of the Quallupilluk, an aquatic creature that lived out on the ice flows and waited for little children to pass by so it could leap up out of the water and drag them down to the depths. Indeed, the Quallu may have been the inspiration for these stories.

The Quallu is a large, mammalian Mer with a thick layer of blubber protecting it from the icy waters of the Bering Sea. It grows to be around eight feet long. It is well known for the long strands of kelp that latch onto its smooth gray skin and grow there. This is a symbiotic relationship; the kelp is able to reproduce over a larger area and the Mer has the benefit of camouflage ideal for the kelp forests where it hunts.

Distantly related to the walrus, the air-breathing Quallu is the only Mer able to survive on land. Though they are usually solitary animals, it isn't uncommon to see several Quallu sunbathing on the same island during mating season. While fast-moving underwater, it is slow and awkward on land.

The Quallu's diet consists of large marine mammals such as seals. It is exceptionally strong and hunts aggressively, attacking and killing its prey with its tusks and horns. Since it views anything around the size of a seal to be potential food, it sometimes attacks humans and small boats.

The Quallu Mer's natural predator is the killer whale. As ~TeachMeMogster reminded me to point out, killer whales eat the young ones (only about three or four feet long). A fully grown Quallu is more than a match for any predator.
